The Breakfast Club at Giant’s Head Elementary School has been in existence for five years and continues to expand based on the needs of children. The club continues to prosper through the support of SADI (Summerland Asset Development Initiative), local service groups, businesses and individuals. We want to especially acknowledge the leadership and hard work of Valerie Wright, our coordinator.
The club is open Tuesday through Thursday before school at 8:00am. It offers a nutritious breakfast to students who for whatever reason may not have eaten before school and the opportunity to connect with an adult or senior student from Summerland Secondary School who volunteer their time. Some students drop in simply for social reasons to connect with another person first thing at school. Aside from the nutritional importance of breakfast, the club strives to build on a child’s relationship with another adult which is key to personal growth and self esteem. It also allows for the development of new community relationships.
The benefits of a nutritious breakfast are evident. Children who eat a healthy breakfast are better equipped to learn when the bell rings at 8:35!
