For a second year in a row the Pen High Jr. Girls Volleyball team has earned
the title as best in the Okanagan. The Lakers dominated play on Fri. winning
their pool without dropping a game. S. Kamloops 2-0, Kelowna Christian 2-0, and
Kalamalka 2-0. Sat. saw the Lakers come out a little flat against Princess
Margaret (who battled hard), the Lakers were victorious 2-0. In the semi-final
Pen High came up against a fully charged KSS who came out swinging handing the
Lakers their only loss of the tournament 13-25. Things didn't look too good
until well into the second game when Pen High woke from their slumber and
started to play Laker Volleyball taking the second 25-21. The third game the Pen
High took control defeating the Owls 15-6 to move onto the Final. The final set
up a rematch of the Thompson River: Lakers vs. Fulton (Vernon). The Lakers
cruised in the final defeating the Maroon's 25-18, 25-11.
Members of this outstanding team are Adra Greig, Katie Delorme, Jamie Craig,
Cassie Keir, Janna Clarke, Dani Pratt, Gabby Levesque, Keirsten Mend, Carissa
Kocsis. Jamie Craig and Katie Delorme were named as 1st team all stars and
Keirsten Mend was named tournament MVP.
The Lakers head to the coast next week for the 2009 Provincial Championships
which are being hosted by Seaquam (Delta) and Earl Marriott (White Rock).
Jr. Girls Win TRU Tourney!
Pen High Jr. Girls take home first place trophy from the
Thompson River University 32 team tourney. The Lakers swept through their round
robin games going 6-0 against Valleyview (Kamloops), Fulton (Vernon), and Kelly
Road (Prince George). The first round playoff game saw the Lakers draw John
McGuiness (Prince George), the top team out of the north. The Laker's probably
played their best match of the tourney defeating the Roadrunners 25-16, 25-9.
This set up a Sat. morning meeting between with VSS in the quarter final. The
Lakers quickly took care of business 25-11, 25-9. Next up was Mt. Boucherie who
fought hard and had the Lakers down 23-21 in the first game, Pen High overcame
this deficit and took the game 25-23 and then came out swinging to take the
second game 25-16. The final was a rematch against a Fulton team who really
stepped up their play on Satuday. Again Pen High found themselves down 23-21 and
battled back once again to take the first game 25-23. The second match saw the
Lakers get out to a quick start (25-15) to finish the weekend undefeated at
14-0. Their overall season match record (against Jr. teams) now stands at 26-1
with their only loss coming against the #1 ranked team in the Province
(Riverside, Coquitlam).
Coaches Paul Mend and Matt Craig were very pleased with the
performance of their team this weekend. "The girls really showed up this weekend
and our triumverate in the middle (Adra Grieg, Danni Pratt, Janna Clarke) really
stepped up their level of play." "It was an overall team effort with everyone
contributing." The girls will see how they match up against some of the top Sr.
teams in the province when they play in the Pen High Sr. tourney starting at
2:00pm this Friday.

This was a 10 team tournament. We finished 1st in our pool on
the Friday and then came up against VSS in the 1/4 final on Saturday morning
25-9, 25-16. Against KSS in the Semis again we won two straight..25-20, 25-21.
The final game of the day came against a very good Fraser Valley Christian
team..23-25, 25-23, 15-6 in the third....both of the first games were very
close, the second game we needed to come back from 21-23 to pull out the victory
to send to the third and deciding game!
It was a total team effort...we had only 8 of our 9 players
on hand and everyone contributed to the victories!
