Schools Attended:
Summerland Secondary School. University of Victoria (Bachelor of Arts - Geography and Political Science). University of British Columbia (Master of Arts - Community and Regional Planning).
How I got started on my career:
My undergraduate degree allowed exposure to a broad-based arts programme with concentrations in political science and geography. My degree focused on political theory, international relations and environmental issues. I entered into a Master of Arts (MA) programme in Community and Regional Planning. I started on an
international development career path after completing my MA degree through a volunteer opportunity offered through the Sustainable
Development Research Institute at UBC. This was a Canadian funded internship programme in overseas development. I worked with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Malawi. This opportunity opened doors in international development that has taken me to countries among others such as Kazakhstan to work on a health communication project and Sierra Leone, a post-conflict recovery situation, to provide humanitarian assistance.
Highlights & interests:
I enjoy traveling and experiencing new places and people. More recently I have been involved in a capoeira group that also works with orphaned children. Through this group activity children have an opportunity to develop skills in movement, music and build self-confidence. In my recreational time I enjoy hiking, participating in cultural events, reading and being with friends and family.
Advice to young people:
If given the opportunity, try to travel and experience other cultures and countries. For each person it is a unique experience and it can give a greater understanding of oneself and your relation to others. With respect to education and/or career, do what you like to do and challenge yourself. As you grow continue to learn and keep your mind open. Importantly, try to maintain a work/life balance it can help to keep things in perspective.
