67 Stories
67 Stories is a monthly update that includes a collection of stories from our schools. These stories display our dynamic schools with examples of student engagement, creative, and inclusive learning environment.
SD67 hosted the Thompson Okanagan Branch meeting February 28 - March 1. Trustees and staff from around the Thompson Okanagan Region were in attendance. A special thank you to Erica Fitton, Ashely Aoki, Nicole Simon and Dustin Hyde for presenting the great work that is being done here in SD67.
Instead of exchanging Valentine’s cards and gifts, Columbia’s school community united for our annual Valentine’s Book Exchange, orchestrated by Mrs. Snider’s Grade 2/3 class. Students and families were invited to donate gently used books, which were displayed for students to choose a new-to-them story to take home. The enthusiasm was evident as the young leaders from Mrs. Snider’s class created signs, organized the books, and guided each class to the exchange tables. The school was filled with happy readers exploring their new books!

This month at Summerland Middle School our focus was building resiliency. We discussed growth mindset, overcoming personal obstacles, and developing grit for those tough times. Our culminating activity was a presentation by Ryan Straschnitzki, a surviving member of the Humbolt Bronco's Hockey team. Ryan shared his story of resiliency and mental fortitude, as he continues to recover and set new life goals. His message really resonated with our community.
Students at KVR Middle School presented to City Council and led an assembly to highlight the ripple effects of kindness, promoting Real Acts of Caring (RAC) Week and fostering a strong sense of belonging. To conclude the event, students created thank-you cards for their teachers, recognizing their support. This initiative reflects the district’s commitment to inclusive, safe learning environments that nurture student wellbeing and connection.

At Queen's Park we are learning about the Four Seasons and reading Neekna and Chemai. We are learning how the original people of the Okanagan lived. We are learning about what they ate, what they had to do to survive each season. Right now we are learning about Winter and comparing what we do in Winter to what they did a long time ago. We are thankful we do not have to make our own shoes and clothes. We are learning to dress appropriate for the weather. We made a little craft of mocassins. We are thankful we do not have to make these anymore. We also learned about how we create garbage and how the first people used everything, repaired things, and made everything last and not be wasted. We are learning about sharing circles, and learning about winter houses. We are learning about the stories told in Wintertime.

This month at Giant's Head we had a school wide Outdoor Challenge. Students and families tracked the number of minutes that students spent playing outside and submitted them to Mrs. Haas, our Indigenous Support Worker, who then organized an outdoor fire and hot chocolate celebration for the 2 classes who had the most time spent outside - Congratulations to Mrs. Zral's Kindergarten class and Mrs. Balfour's Grade 3 class! From Jan. 24 through Feb. 12 our students spent over 1200 hours outside!

These pledges will be displayed in the school as reminders of their commitments, encouraging students to actively contribute to a positive school environment.
At Wiltse Elem, culturally responsive literature is a priority. A Wiltse student shared with a teacher, "I am so excited. I just saw a book in the library with a kid who looks just like me."

Many of our students come to study in School District #67 because of the natural beauty. We take every opportunity to get out onto the land with our students. Our most recent Professional Development Day had students out at Chute Lake Lodge where they got to snowshoe and skate on a frozen lake, toboggan, and even try their hand at ice fishing? Top it off with a campfire and smores and you have a perfect day.

This month our school focused on our growth plan goal of infusing joy into reading. Our whole school gathered to read together and share what they were excited about with their reading. KVR has been in the spirit of giving this December! Several Grade 7 classes raised money through bake sales, craft sales, and garage sales to support SOWINS, One Sky, Christmas Cards for Seniors, Stockings for Seniors, SPCA, and BC Children's Hospital. Our talented band students also showcased their hard work at a festive performance, spreading joy and celebrating the power of community connection.

Uplands students sharpened their Core Competencies of Social Responsibility and Communication when they visited Haven Hill Seniors home and delivered a personalized card to each and every resident. The students stayed after to visit and make crafts as well.
Trout Creek students starting selling Christmas cookies in their front yard. That cookie stand blossomed an idea on selling these sugar by the dozen. This is the 6th year these students bake and sell the cookies. This year the kids baked 5,480 cookies and to date they have donated over $20,000 to the Toys for Tots and Teen in Summerland. It is amazing to see what a child's idea for a cookie stand can blossom into with the support and encouragement of a school, students and their families. The Summerland community has also be instrumental in this process by purchasing the cookies each year.
West Bench students are excited to be playing for the WB cup. This floor hockey tournament is organized and ran by students. Our International Student Program relies on Homestay Families to host students during their time in Canada. We are lucky to have many great host families in Penticton and Summerland. One way we say thank you is by throwing a Holiday Celebration. There is nothing more Canadian than hockey, so host everyone (students and families) at a Penticton Vees game. We invite Santa and get a behind the scenes tour to meet all the players. What a great evening and event!!

Students are learning to navigate, Spaces, an assessment and reporting tool that provides a platform for students to build on-going portfolios that document their learning journeys. And it's pretty fun!

At Carmi Elementary, we have been focused on equity, striving to ensure that all students feel seen for who they are. At the end of October, Carmi proudly celebrated not only Halloween, but also Diwali and Day of the Dead. The school was decorated to celebrate all 3 events. Students learned about the 3 different cultural celebrations through assembly, announcements and class activities. Families were sent information home and encouraged to share which cultural celebration they learned about and which ones they were celebrating. Many parents shared how happy this made them feel that their children were learning about such wonderful celebrations. The response made us proud and grateful of the cultural diversity we are lucky to have here at Carmi. We continue to weave equity through our various school events, including for Remembrance Day. Our kindergarten students have shared what peace means to them in their native languages. and our whole school celebrated the contribution of Indigenous soldiers in Canada's military history.

Our student-led TRC Orange Shirt Day assembly, hosted by Ms. Kay and Mrs. Rutten's classes, was a powerful performance that honoured the experiences of Indigenous peoples and brought attention to the importance of reconciliation. Likewise, their student-led parent-teacher conferences allowed students to take ownership of their learning journey, fostering meaningful connections between families and the school. These initiatives reflect our district's strategic commitment to creating learning environments that support social and emotional growth, while promoting cultural understanding and diversity, ensuring every student feels valued and heard.

At KVR we started the year off with a school wide assembly. The purpose of this meeting was to help students feel better connected to the staff at the school. Melissa Burdock created an interactive Kahoot-style trivia game where the different classes each had a different coloured piece of paper that they could hold up. The colour of the paper corresponded to the coloured options of each possible answer. The questions were all about interests and passions of staff. This was a fun way for students to learn about interests of staff and it was a spring board to allow students to connect with teachers about things they have in common. The purpose of this activity was to increase the students feeling of belonging. The hope is that students would connect based on common interests and that some clubs were be started as a result.

Without host families we would not be able to host International Students. We are very thankful to the many families that open their homes to the world and host students. One way we say thanks is inviting our families and students to come together, get to know each other at one of our beautiful outdoor spaces.
